The San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus recently put out a video in which they sing a little ditty called “We’ll Convert Your Children.”
The literal message of the song is that they intend to convert your children to being friends and allies of the gay community, and then your kids will convert you.
Except that the gay community already has enough friends and allies—same sex marriage is the law of the land, and you’re kids’ political opinions aren’t likely to sway you. What historically has proven much more likely to make parents allies of the gay community is if they have a child who is an active homosexual.
So we all know what they really mean when they sing “we’ll convert your children.”
But even if the loaded term “convert” meant merely that they intend to change your children’s view of homosexuality, that is still an offensive sentiment, given that disapproval of homosexuality is a doctrinal teaching of all the monotheistic religions, taught in Scripture, and held by many religious denominations. So given even the most harmless interpretation, “we’ll convert your children” means we’ll convert them away from conservative religion.
By the way, they know this was offensive, so they’ve disabled third-party posting of the video. If you want to watch it, you must watch on YouTube (but you probably don’t want to watch it unless you have a strong stomach): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ArOQF4kadHA
