New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) directed that the One World Trade Center's spire be lit pink overnight on Tuesday to celebrate his signing of a law allowing abortions until birth and letting non-doctors commit abortions.
The law, the Reproductive Health Act, also erases the state’s recognition of unborn babies older than 24 weeks as potential homicide victims.
Cuomo called the bill an “historic victory for New Yorkers and our liberal values.” It was passed on the anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the 1973 Supreme Court decision that brought abortion on demand to every state.
In 1970, New York was the first state to legalize abortion. Cuomo said that he was directing that the 408-foot spire on the One World Trade Center, as well as the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge, the Kosciuszko Bridge, and the Alfred E. Smith Building in Albany be lit in pink to “celebrate this achievement and shine a bright light forward for the rest of the nation to follow.”
After passing this bill, New York legislators gave themselves a standing ovation:
Statements from abortion supporters suggest they fear how the current Supreme Court might rule on abortion.
New York’s Mario M. Cuomo Bridge was also lit Tuesday to celebrate the passage of the bill. The bridge was named after former New York Governor Mario Cuomo—father of the current governor— and traverses New York’s Hudson River.
Cuomo is looking to pass a separate bill requiring insurance companies to provide free contraceptive care, according to The New York Times.
It is interesting that the spire looks just like the needle that is used to supply the lethal injection to the living unborn child. Also noteworthy is: A site that commemorates the death of roughly 3,000 innocents now celebrates the death of roughly 3,000 innocents each day (estimates according to CDC and Guttmacher Institute).
